Viki Mather lives by a little lake in Northern Ontario, about half way between Temagami and Sudbury, as the Raven flies. She began working with clay in the late 70s, then took a 25 year break while self-employed at a wilderness tourist lodge, and raised two daughters.
Six years ago Viki joined the Sudbury Basin potters and picked up right where she left off. Mostly she makes bowls: on the wheel, with slabs, pinch-pots and with coils. Shallow bowls, deep bowls, wide and narrow.
Two years ago she worked with the Friends of Temagami as part of the pARTners for Wolf Lake
project. This was to raise awareness of the Wolf Lake old growth Red Pine Forest, the largest contiguous old red pine forest in the world. Viki has worked to protect this forest for the past 33 years. The exhibit, "Spirit of the Red Pine," toured Ontario, with the final show in Cobalt this summer. Some of the work from that show will be available at Laura's Art Shoppe this fall.
